A trip to the Northwest!

Kent has just returned from a wood buying trip in Washington State and British Columbia. After checking in on Tom the burl man (read Tom's story here) and looking over the selectively cut maple burl he has been milling for us, Kent had the opportunity to meet Jeremy Hinke. Jeremy owns a company that specializes in sourcing and milling Western Red cedar, Douglas fir, yellow cedar, sitka spruce and hemlock. Kent fell in love with one of Jeremy's logs, and CSWoods will soon become the proud owner of 3000 board feet of fir. This Coastal BC reclaimed log (check out photos of it below) had been a floating support for Jeremy's Handlog camp for many years, a floating structure that the crew lives and works on. Jeremy remembers the process of lifting this log off the forest floor and cabling it to the water as a tough one. It is huge! The fir log was slabbed for us, and is now headed for Vancouver to be vacuum kiln dried and then put on a truck with some maple burl headed for our facility in Southern Colorado. These collector quality tops are one of a kind! These are perfect specimens of old growth, fine grain and even coloration.

Visiting Select Timbers in British Colombia!

Visiting Jeremy Hinke in British Colombia, Kent had the opportunity to observe first hand a serious commitment to forest sustainability. Select Timbers specializes in obtaining and utilizing old growth Douglas fir, yellow cedar, sitka spruce, hemlock, and red cedar. Their hard won logs are treated with the up-most respect and are turned into some of the finest forest products in the world. Using one of the last working A-frames on the coast, they are both part of the rich traditional history of the wild west coast logging industry, and dedicated to environmental practice and land stewardship. This makes them a great partner for CSWoods, and gives us the opportunity offer our customers material that has been hand selected carefully throughout the whole process from tree to finished product. The log and slabs that appear to the left and below will soon be here at CSWoods, and we can't wait to proceed what the next step in their journey. Drying them is going to be exciting, and finding out what they are destined to be will be fun. They lend themselves to beautiful table and bar tops, but our clients never cease to suprise us with their vision and skill.
