| Kent has just returned from a wood buying trip in Washington State and British Columbia. After checking in on Tom the burl man (read Tom's story here) and looking over the selectively cut maple burl he has been milling for us, Kent had the opportunity to meet Jeremy Hinke. Jeremy owns a company that specializes in sourcing and milling Western Red cedar, Douglas fir, yellow cedar, sitka spruce and hemlock. Kent fell in love with one of Jeremy's logs, and CSWoods will soon become the proud owner of 3000 board feet of fir (pictured below). This Coastal BC reclaimed log had been a floating support for Jeremy's Handlog camp for many years, a floating structure that the crew lives and works on. Jeremy remembers the process of lifting this log off the forest floor and cabling it to the water as a tough one. It is huge! The fir log was slabbed for us, and is now is headed for Vancouver to be vacuum kiln dried and then put on a truck with some maple burl headed for our facility in Southern Colorado. These collector quality tops are one of a kind! These are perfect specimens of old growth, fine grain and even coloration. |

THE WORD "GRAIN"
|
| According to Bruce Hoadleys book Understanding Wood there are over 50 different ways for the word grain to be used in relation to wood and wood use. Grain direction (long grain), texture (coarse grain), figure (curly grain), pore size (fine grain), how the material is sawn (flat grain), natural and man made defects (rowed grain, chipped grain), alignment of cells along or across a plank (end grain, long grain, short grain) and surface quality (raised grain, fuzzy grain) can all be described with the word grain. This myriad of meaning is common in the nomenclature of wood species and technical terms. When ordering wood it is important to be clear about what exactly is needed, especially when seeking something a little bit out of the ordinary. |
